Underoath - Lost in the Sound of Separation

I have to be honest. Underoath's last album; "Define the Great Line" hit me like a dump truck. While I wasn't immediately impressed with the album, after repeated listens it became something truly great. It was heavy, it was experimental and it had just enough hooks to pull me in and make me the fan I am today. That, for me, was the album that opened up the world of Post-Hardcore, Metalcore and Hardcore.

A couple years later, Underoath are back with their latest offering to the world of Post-Hardcore. I've been listening to this album repeatedly since it came out, waiting for it to sink in like their previous release. It has, yet not in the same way. There is no question that this album is heavy. The first few tracks start out furiously and are a fair indication of what the boys from Underoath set out to do when they recorded this one. There is less experimentation and a greater focus on their tighter, more direct, heavier side. Songs like "The Only Survivor Was Miraculously Unharmed" and "We are the Involuntary" come out swinging, with excellent screaming and dizzying drumming, follow up with solid sung vocals and often change their pace to lead into the following song. The result is a well flowing album but a lot of songs that don't stand out on their own.

Overall, the songs that mainly focus on being face-meltingly heavy, suck you in but aren't the songs that keep you coming back. Songs such as "Emergency Broadcast - The End is Near" "Too Bright to See too Loud to Hear" and the mostly instrumental "Desolate Earth - The End Is Here" aren't afraid to try new things and ultimately make the album as good as it is.

Lyrics

"We, we're a race, a human race
Under the glass behind it all
Watch us crawl so fearfully
I might be wrong after all
But weren't we just so delicate yesterday
Sit back and think about it
Sleep it off, sleep on it
Come to, and make your motions
Listen up
There's a calling ahead
A desperation
A falling of man
We are all lost in the sound of separation. "

Overall: 4/5

I've been posting half-assed-amateur reviews on my Virb site for a while now, figured I'd post the odd one up here... keep in mind they're just my opinions on an album and I'm not much of a reviewer. I just like to share my opinions of music with friends and people that visit my little corner of the internet.

Wicked review, Matt. Im taking a listen right now -- Might actually pick up their new album. Their song "Never Meant to Break Your Heart" is really reminding me of Isis. Sounds great so far, although its a little more screaming than im used to.
